Nels Carman Big Band Night

Penfield Recreation sponsors Nels Carman Big Band Nights (featuring the Penfield Big Band) the first Tuesday of every month (except July & August). Dances are held from 7:30-9:30 pm at Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Rd. An admission fee of $2.00 per person is collected at the door. The band takes a break at 8:30pm and hot coffee and snacks are included in your admission fee. And if you get tired of dancing, there are always plenty of chairs available for you to sit back and relax while listening to one of the best big bands in Western New York.

The Penfield Big Band (originally the Penfield Rotary Band) was formed in 1954. It was the “house band” for the Penfield Rotary Club’s annual fundraising variety shows. As the shows grew each year in size and quality, the band attracted many local professional and semi-professional musicians to its ranks. The last Rotary show was held in 1996, but since the musicians enjoyed making music together, they decided to continue playing as the “Penfield Big Band” and have been “giving back to the community” for many years.

The “Penfield Big Band” emulates the classic big band sound of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s and also adds current big band arrangements from the 1960s to the present. At one of their dances you will hear many different styles of music suitable for dancing; Fox-Trots, Tangos, Cha-Chas, Rumbas, Polkas, Waltzes, and good old Swing. The band is comprised of seventeen professional and semi-professional musicians and is co-directed by Howard Rowe and Steve Quance. The band manager and announcer is Nelson O. Carman Jr.
